What is Reiki Healing?

Reiki hands

(pronounced ray-key) is a Japanese word representing universal life energy/spirit, the energy which is all around us. It is derived from rei, meaning universal spirit, and ki, meaning life force energy.

Reiki involves the transfer of energy from practitioner to patient and enhances the body’s natural ability to heal itself through the balancing of energy.

Reiki provides exactly what is needed on all levels and it is this unique blend of energy which makes Reiki such a powerful form of life force energy. Reiki energy removes energy blockages, brings about deep relaxation, and increases the vibrational frequency of the body.
The individual being healed has to take an active part in the healing process. This is done by taking responsibility for his or her healing by intending to be open to the life force energy.

 REIKI Light
What to expect from a Reiki Healing session. The client remains fully clothed for Reiki. It’s a good idea that you dress comfortably and there will be a blanket available just in case you get cold. First we’ll take a few minutes to talk about what it is that has brought you to me and to set the intention for our session. This will also help you to feel more comfortable and able to relax your energy flow into allowing your intention. Typically clients will lay down on the Reiki massage table but if you prefer you may sit in a chair.  The most important thing is that you be open to the energy you receive. If you are closed to the idea that Reiki can help you, you are likely not to receive the same benefit as someone who is more open. Because of this results will vary depending on the person. If you have a serious illness or are wanting to address a long standing issue it is best to start with 4 sessions.
Most of the time a person will feel relaxed and uplifted by a Reiki treatment. However, sometimes a person will have what is called a healing crisis. As a person’s vibration goes up, toxins that have been stored in the body will be released into the blood stream to be filtered by the liver and kidneys and removed from the system. When this happens, sometimes a person can get a headache or stomach ache or feel weak. If this happens, it is a good idea to drink more water, eat lighter meals and get more rest. The body is cleansing as part of the healing process so this is a good sign.

Try Reiki. This alternative medicine treatment can manipulate your energy and cure what ails you.” — Dr. Mehmet Oz, Host of the Dr. Oz show

Hospitals are also incorporating Reiki energy healing for their patients recovery and healing such as the Cancer Treatment Centers of America.

The History of Reiki
In the late 1800’s a man named Dr. Mikao Usui rediscovered this ancient science which he called Reiki. The story as told by Mrs. Takata goes something like this:Dr. Usui was the principal of the Doshisha University in Kyoto Japan, and also a Christian preacher and missionary. One day one of his students asked him if he could duplicate the healing by the laying on of hands which the Bible describes was done by Christ.Dr. Usui replied he could not, and there upon resigned his position at the university to travel to the United States to    receive further Christian training at the University of Chicago in the hope of learning this healing skill described in the Bible. After studying seven years in the U.S. and discovering American Christians had no idea about Christ’s healing by hands either he began studying other philosophies and religions, including Hinduism, Zoroastrianism, and Buddhism. He read a passage in the Buddhists texts about the Buddha healing by laying on hands and decided to return to Japan and see what the Buddhists there might know.
After a few years of studying in a Japanese Zen Buddhist temple in Kyoto, where he was befriended by the wise head monk who became his mentor, Dr. Usui had not found his answer. He then moved on to study in China with the Chinese Buddhists, but came to the same conclusion as he had in Japan, that they did not have the answers he sought either.Realizing many original Buddhist text were written in Sanskrit, the ancient language of India, he decided to learn that language so that he might study those ancient Buddhist Sanskrit writings. After diligent study of Sanskrit, Dr. Usui eventually found an inscription in Sanskrit which explained how to do the laying on of hands, although the inscription did not contain instructions as to how to activate the energy.Dr. Usui was inspired to return to the Zen temple in Kyoto and talk to his mentor, the senior monk, about what to do about activating the energy. The two of them decided Dr. Usui would be best to meditate at the top of a mountain outside of Kyoto for 21 days. On the last day of the meditation Dr. Usui had a spectacular epiphany experience during which he was shown how to activate the energy and give the gift of Reiki, the healing by the laying on of hands. He then came down the mountain performing miraculous healings. After consulting with his mentor, he later set off into the world doing good works, teaching Reiki, and healing the infirm with his newly given gift, all the while learning many important lessons about human nature. Dr. Usui died on March 9, 1926 and is buried in a Zen temple in Tokyo.

The practitioner places their hands on or above the body and allow Reiki Energy Healing to radiate from the hands. In addition to the practitioner radiating  Reiki Energy Healing energy through their hands, sessions may involve the practitioners sweeping their hands above the body in various ways, or incorporating breath to break up energy blocks as well as using crystals or stones. Stress, trauma and illness restrict the natural flow of Ki life force energy through the body. By restoring KI life force energy to the body, Reiki Healing rejuvenates the bodies ability to relax and de-stress, and supports its ability to heal itself.
